Quick Facts
  • Mineral Name: Amethyst (Variety of Quartz)
  • Chemical Formula: SiO₂ (Silicon Dioxide with iron impurities)
  • Mineral Class: Silicate
  • Hardness (Mohs Scale): 7
  • Primary Source: Sidi Rahal, El Kelaâ des Sraghna Province, Atlas Mountains, Morocco
What is Amethyst?
Amethyst is the purple variety of crystalline Quartz, and it is one of the most popular and historically significant gemstones in the world. Its color is derived from natural gamma irradiation acting on trace amounts of ferric iron impurities within the crystal lattice. The color can range from a pale, delicate lilac to a deep, saturated royal purple.
Composition & Appearance
  • Color: Can range from light violet to a deep, rich purple.
  • Crystal Habit: Forms in classic hexagonal prisms with pyramidal terminations. It is most commonly found as crystal clusters lining the inside of cavities in volcanic rock, forming geodes.
  • Luster: Vitreous (glass-like).
  • Key Characteristics: As a variety of Quartz, it is durable and hard. It can often exhibit color zoning, where the color is more intense near the crystal's termination.
The Amethyst from Sidi Rahal is highly distinctive and sought after by collectors for its unique geode formations. These geodes have several signature characteristics:
  • Dark Rind: The outer layer is typically a very dark, almost black Chalcedony or Agate.
  • Red Ring: Between the dark outer rind and the inner Amethyst crystals, there is often a striking, well-defined ring of red, Hematite-stained Chalcedony.
  • Deep Color: The Amethyst crystals within are often a very deep, saturated purple.
This unique combination of a dark exterior, a fiery red inner ring, and a royal purple core makes Sidi Rahal Amethyst geodes instantly recognizable and highly prized.
Metaphysical & Elemental Associations (The following information is based on metaphysical and crystal healing beliefs, not scientific study.)
  • Associated Chakras: Third Eye (Ajna) & Crown (Sahasrara)
Amethyst is a premier spiritual stone, known for its ability to calm the mind and enhance intuition. It is powerfully connected to the Third Eye Chakra, awakening psychic abilities and inner vision. It also stimulates the Crown Chakra, facilitating a connection to higher consciousness, meditation, and spiritual wisdom.
  • Natural Element: Wind/Air
Amethyst is associated with the Wind/Air element, which governs the mind, intellect, and the realm of thought. Its energy is believed to clear the mind of negative patterns, promote mental clarity, relieve stress, and open the pathways for spiritual insight to flow in.
    • Zodiac Sign: Pisces, Aquarius, & Virgo
As the traditional birthstone for February, Amethyst is strongly linked to Pisces and Aquarius, enhancing their spiritual and intuitive natures. It also benefits Virgo by calming their tendency toward an overactive mind and nervous energy, bringing a sense of peace and tranquility.
