- Crystal Habit: Forms in classic hexagonal prisms with pyramidal terminations. It is most commonly found as crystal clusters lining the inside of cavities in volcanic rock, forming geodes.

- Key Characteristics: As a variety of Quartz, it is durable and hard. It can often exhibit color zoning, where the color is more intense near the crystal's termination.
- Dark Rind: The outer layer is typically a very dark, almost black Chalcedony or Agate.
