Ammonite Macrocephalites
Fossil Ammonite – Macrocephalites ornati
Jurassic Period – Gräbingen, Germany Mineral & Fossil Specimen Data Sheet
Quick FactsSpecies: Macrocephalites ornati Age: Jurassic Period (approx. 165–170 million years old) Formation: Upper Jurassic marine sediments Origin: Gräbingen (Grüblingen), Germany
THE SPECIMEN This fossil ammonite is a beautifully preserved example of Macrocephalites ornati, a large, ribbed ammonite species known for its bold ornamentation and strong shell architecture. These specimens display the classic thick, rounded whorls with pronounced ribbing that sweep across the shell in rhythmic arcs.
Many pieces show excellent detail, including:
ABOUT THIS FIND
The LocalityGräbingen (sometimes spelled Grüblingen) is part of a well‑known Jurassic fossil belt in southern Germany. This region was once a shallow tropical sea teeming with ammonites, belemnites, and marine reptiles. The fine‑grained sediments of the area allowed for excellent fossil preservation.
German Jurassic ammonites are prized worldwide for their clarity, completeness, and scientific importance.
The FormationDuring the Jurassic Period, Macrocephalites ornati lived in warm marine environments. When these cephalopods died, their shells settled into soft seafloor mud. Over millions of years, the sediments lithified into limestone, preserving the ammonites in remarkable detail.
The ribbed shell structure helped the living animal regulate buoyancy and withstand water pressure, and today it creates the striking visual texture collectors admire.
MINERALOGY / FOSSIL COMPOSITIONMaterial: Original aragonite shell is often replaced or infilled by:
METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
The Stone of Ancient CyclesAmmonites are widely regarded as symbols of evolution, continuity, and the spiral of life.
Transformation & Growth: The spiral form represents personal development, helping one move through life’s cycles with clarity and purpose.
Grounding Ancient Energy: Linked to the Root Chakra, ammonites are believed to stabilize energy, connect one to Earth’s ancient history, and promote resilience.
Flow & Balance: The rhythmic chamber pattern is associated with balancing emotional flow and encouraging steady progress through change.
Collectors often use ammonites as talismans for grounding, transformation, and connection to deep time.
