Quick Facts
  • Mineral Name: Aragonite
  • Chemical Formula: CaCO₃ (Calcium Carbonate)
  • Mineral Class: Carbonate
  • Hardness (Mohs Scale): 3.5 - 4
  • Primary Source: Ighroud Mine, Safi Province, Morocco
What is Aragonite?
Aragonite is a calcium carbonate mineral and is a polymorph of Calcite. This means it shares the exact same chemical formula (CaCO₃) as Calcite but has a different crystal structure. It typically forms at lower temperatures and higher pressures than Calcite and is also formed through biological processes (it's the primary component of most seashells and coral). It is less stable than Calcite and over geological time, it will often convert back into it.
Composition & Appearance
  • Color: The cave formations from Morocco are typically a pure, snowy white to off-white or cream-colored.
  • Crystal Habit: This specimen's key feature is its delicate, branching, coral-like structure. This formation is known as coralloidal or, more poetically, flos ferri ("flowers of iron"). It consists of countless small, acicular (needle-like) crystals growing outwards and intertwining to create intricate, almost organic-looking sculptures.
  • Luster: Vitreous (glassy) to slightly silky on the surface of the fine crystals.
  • Key Characteristics: Aragonite is extremely fragile in this form and must be handled with great care. Like Calcite, it will react and fizz when exposed to acid.
The Ighroud Mine in the Safi Province of Morocco is well-known for producing these beautiful and highly aesthetic flos ferri Aragonite specimens. Unlike typical cave stalactites, which grow downwards with gravity, these intricate formations often grow in seemingly random directions, following air currents and the slow seepage of mineral-rich water through cracks in the host rock. Collectors prize these specimens for their delicate, sculptural beauty that mimics coral or plant life.

Metaphysical & Elemental Associations (The following information is based on metaphysical and crystal healing beliefs, not scientific study.)
  • Associated Chakra: Root Chakra (Muladhara)
Aragonite is known as a premier grounding and stabilizing stone. It is deeply connected to the Root Chakra, helping to anchor one's energy firmly to the Earth. It is believed to calm overactive minds, reduce stress, and instill a sense of patience and discipline. Its energy encourages a centered and focused approach to life's challenges.
  • Natural Element: Earth
As a calcium carbonate that forms deep within the planet, Aragonite has a profound connection to the Earth element. It embodies the patient, nurturing, and formative energies of the Earth itself. It is thought to promote conservation, environmentalism, and a deeper connection to the natural world.
  • Zodiac Sign: Capricorn
Aragonite is strongly associated with Capricorn. This Earth sign is known for its discipline, patience, reliability, and structured approach to life. Aragonite's energy is said to support these very traits, making it an excellent stone for Capricorns or anyone needing to cultivate more focus and practicality in their endeavors.
