TYPE SPECIES: Nannoglyphus wehrlii Nestler, 1978
DIAGNOSIS: A small Boletechinus from the upper Cretaceous of central Texas, Austin Group, Ozan Formation and also from southwest Texas, Taylor Group, Anacacho Formation, with pronounced tubercles from the ambitus and adorally, less sculptured test than other Boletechinus, and very minute tubercles on the aboral surface.
STRATIGRAPHICAL OCCURRENCE & DISTRIBUTION: Ozan Formation, Travis County, Texas. It was found in a soft gray marl and associated with Alomma lindarae Thompson, 2020 and Hemiaster sp. Two specimens found.
DESCRIPTION:
Shape and size. From above, rounded (crushed to oval), apical system greater than 50% of test. From the side, Hemispherical, ambitus 28% from adoral side, small domed, wide base, base rounded. Adoral surface slightly depressed, peristome large, greater than 50% of test. Perradial and interradial sutures create troughs on the test surface.
Ambulacral & Interambulacral. Ambulacrals lanceolate, pointed at apical system, widest at ambitus to peristome. Pore pairs small, uniserial, tri-geminate.
Ambulacral less than half width of interambulacral at ambitus. From ambitus to peristome tubercles more pronounced.
Tubercles. Crenulate, imperforate, large below ambitus to adoral surface. Areole pronounced on the adoral surface. Interambulacral tubercles larger than those of ambulacral. Surface coarsely granular. Interambulacral broad. Thick minute granulation above the ambitus especially near adradial and interradial zones.
Apical system. Hemicyclic apical system, small, 28% size of test.
Peristome. Peristome greater than 50% diameter of test, slightly depressed. Buccal notches barely noticeable.
Periproct. Periproct large, 63% size of apical system, slightly pentagonal shape.
Spines & Lantern. Unknown.
SPECIMENS STUDIED: One specimen, the Holotype NPL XXXXX.
ETYMOLOGY: Is named for Benjamin Tyler Stoviak, a fossil collector of Central Texas, xxuhjhx xjxkjjhxkj xkxjkxjjx.
REMARKS: This is only known Boletechinus from Texas.
From North America is Boletechinus mcglameryae of Alabama Boletechinus delawarensis from Delaware, both from the Maastrichtian. This specimen has a less sculpted test and has minute tubercles in interambulacral.
This specimen matches many features of Zeuglopleurus costulatus from the Cenomanian and Turonian of England and Germany. The ratio of peristome to test diameter, of periproct to test diameter, of height to test height, of the interambulacral tubercle size to interambulacral plate size, and the number of pore pairs – all relate closely to Z. costulatus. I separated this from the genus of Zeuglopleurus with the tubercles size difference aborally and adorally and the less sculpted test.
I separated from the genus of Echinocyphus with the domed aboral surface, the lack of aboral pitting, and the large peristome.
