Gemstone - Pink Dolomite

Picture
Quick Facts
  • Mineral Name: Dolomite
  • Chemical Formula: CaMg(CO₃)₂ (Calcium Magnesium Carbonate)
  • Mineral Class: Carbonate
  • Hardness (Mohs Scale): 3.5 - 4
  • Primary Source: Touissite, Oujda Province, Morocco

What is Dolomite?
Dolomite is a calcium magnesium carbonate mineral. It is very similar to Calcite, but half of the calcium ions have been replaced by magnesium. The rock composed primarily of the mineral Dolomite is also called dolomite (or dolostone). It is a common mineral, but well-formed, aesthetic crystals are prized by collectors.
Composition & Appearance
  • Color: The specimens from Touissite are famous for their delicate, soft pink color, which is often attributed to trace amounts of manganese substituting for magnesium in the crystal lattice.
  • Crystal Habit: The most defining characteristic of Dolomite from this locality is its crystal habit. It forms beautiful rhombohedral crystals that are distinctly curved into a "saddle" shape. These curved rhombs often grow together into beautiful, stacked aggregates.
  • Luster: Pearly to vitreous (glassy).
  • Key Characteristics: Will react very slowly with cold, dilute hydrochloric acid (it will fizz much more readily if the acid is warmed or the dolomite is powdered). This slow reaction distinguishes it from Calcite, which fizzes vigorously in cold acid.
The Touissite-Oujda mining area is a historic lead-zinc district that has produced a wealth of incredible mineral specimens. It is considered a "classic" locality and is arguably the world's most famous source for high-quality, pink, saddle-shaped Dolomite crystals. Collectors prize specimens from this region for their unique form, delicate color, and aesthetic arrangements.

Metaphysical & Elemental Associations (The following information is based on metaphysical and crystal healing beliefs, not scientific study.)
  • Associated Chakra: Heart Chakra (Anahata)
Pink Dolomite is a stone of gentle healing and emotional balance. Its soft pink energy is perfectly attuned to the Heart Chakra, helping to soothe heartache, calm emotional distress, and promote feelings of self-love and compassion. It is believed to be a comforting stone, encouraging a positive and charitable outlook.
  • Natural Element: Earth
As a carbonate mineral that forms within the planet, Dolomite has a strong connection to the Earth element. It provides a gentle, nurturing, and grounding energy that helps to stabilize emotions and bring a sense of calm centeredness.
  • Zodiac Sign: Cancer & Libra
The gentle, nurturing energy of Pink Dolomite is an excellent match for the sensitive nature of Cancer, helping to soothe their emotions. It also resonates with Libra, the sign of balance, as Dolomite's energy helps to balance the heart and mind, fostering harmony in relationships.
