Quick Facts
  • Mineral Name: Galena
  • Chemical Formula: PbS (Lead Sulfide)
  • Mineral Class: Sulfide
  • Hardness (Mohs Scale): 2.5 - 2.75 (Very soft)
  • Primary Source: Mibladen Mining District, Midelt Province, Morocco

What is Galena?
Galena is a lead sulfide mineral and has been the world's most important ore of lead since ancient times. It is one of the most abundant and widely distributed sulfide minerals. It often contains significant amounts of silver as an impurity, and in many historic mines, the silver was the primary product, with the lead as a byproduct.
Composition & Appearance
  • Color: A bright, silvery, lead-grey on fresh surfaces. It can tarnish to a duller grey over time with exposure to air.
  • Crystal Habit / Cleavage: Galena is famous for its perfect cubic cleavage. This means it will break cleanly into smaller, perfect cubes. Even when it crystallizes in other forms (like octahedrons), its underlying structure will cause it to fracture into cubic shapes.
  • Luster: Bright and distinctly metallic.
  • Key Characteristics: Its most defining features are its extreme density (it is incredibly heavy for its size), its perfect cubic cleavage, its metallic luster, and its softness. Note: As Galena is a lead mineral, it is advisable to wash hands after handling specimens.
The Mibladen Mining District is a classic and world-famous lead-zinc mining area. It has produced enormous quantities of high-quality Galena specimens, known for their sharp cubic crystals and brilliant luster. Crucially, Galena is the primary ore from which the other famous Mibladen minerals form. The spectacular specimens of Cerussite, Anglesite, and Vanadinite from this region are all secondary minerals that formed through the chemical weathering and alteration of these original Galena deposits.

Metaphysical & Elemental Associations (The following information is based on metaphysical and crystal healing beliefs, not scientific study.)
  • Associated Chakra: Root Chakra (Muladhara)
Galena is a powerful grounding stone. Its immense density and connection to the deep earth make it a premier stone for the Root Chakra. It provides a strong anchor to the physical world, enhances stability, and brings a sense of centeredness and security.
  • Natural Element: Earth
Galena is profoundly connected to the Earth element. It embodies the energy of structure, stability, and the alchemical processes that happen deep within the planet. It is a stone of transformation, representing the solid foundation from which all other things can grow.
  • Zodiac Sign: Capricorn
Galena resonates strongly with Capricorn. This sign, ruled by Saturn, is associated with structure, discipline, and earthly ambition. Galena's perfect cubic structure and its grounding, stabilizing energy are a perfect match for the Capricorn personality, providing support for their long-term goals.
