Quick Facts
  • Mineral Name: Prehnite
  • Chemical Formula: Ca₂Al(AlSi₃O₁₀)(OH)₂ (Calcium Aluminum Silicate)
  • Mineral Class: Phyllosilicate
  • Hardness (Mohs Scale): 6 - 6.5
  • Primary Source: Midelt Region (High Atlas Mountains), Morocco

    What is Prehnite?

  • Prehnite is a calcium aluminum silicate mineral, first discovered in South Africa and named after its discoverer, Colonel Hendrik von Prehn. It is prized for its soft, translucent, apple-green color and its unique crystal habit. It rarely forms sharp, distinct crystals, instead typically occurring in globular, botryoidal (grape-like), or stalactitic masses.
    Composition & Appearance
  • Color: Most commonly a translucent, soft green, ranging from pale sea-foam to a rich apple-green. It can also be yellow, grey, or white.
  • Crystal Habit: The signature form is botryoidal. The surface is often composed of a dense carpet of tiny, terminated crystals, giving it a subtle sparkle and a unique texture.
  • Luster: Vitreous (glassy) to pearly. Its translucence often gives it a soft, gentle glow.

The Midelt Region and the surrounding High Atlas Mountains of Morocco are known for producing a particularly interesting and unique form of Prehnite. Here, it often forms as an epimorph or cast. This happens when Prehnite grows over a pre-existing mineral (often Anhydrite or Laumontite), forming a complete shell. Later, the original mineral dissolves away, leaving a hollow, geometric cast made entirely of Prehnite, perfectly preserving the shape of the mineral that is no longer there. These hollow casts are highly sought after by collectors for their unique origin and sculptural beauty.

Metaphysical & Elemental Associations (The following information is based on metaphysical and crystal healing beliefs, not scientific study.)
  • Associated Chakras: Heart (Anahata) & Solar Plexus (Manipura)
Prehnite is known as the "stone of unconditional love" and is considered a powerful healer's stone. It is strongly linked to the Heart Chakra, fostering peace, compassion, and emotional healing. It also connects the heart to the will (the Solar Plexus Chakra), helping one to live a life aligned with their heart's true desires. It is a stone that calms the environment and brings peace and protection.
  • Natural Element: Earth
Prehnite has a deep and nurturing connection to the Earth element. It embodies the gentle, life-giving energy of nature and is believed to help facilitate a deeper connection with the natural world and elemental beings. Its energy is grounding, calming, and restorative.
  • Zodiac Sign: Libra & Virgo
Prehnite resonates strongly with Libra, as it promotes peace, harmony, and diplomacy. It helps Libras to de-clutter their minds and environments. It is also an excellent stone for Virgo, helping to ease their tendency towards worry and providing a sense of calm trust in the universe.
