Quick Facts
  • Mineral Name: Pyrite
  • Common Name: Fool's Gold
  • Chemical Formula: FeS₂ (Iron Sulfide)
  • Mineral Class: Sulfide
  • Hardness (Mohs Scale): 6 - 6.5
  • Primary Source: Hubei Province, China

What is Pyrite?
Pyrite is an iron sulfide mineral and the most common sulfide on Earth. It earned its famous nickname, "Fool's Gold," due to its superficial resemblance to gold. However, Pyrite is much harder and more brittle than gold and will leave a greenish-black streak, whereas gold leaves a yellow streak. Its name is derived from the Greek word pyr, meaning "fire," because it can create sparks when struck against metal or another hard material.
Composition & Appearance
  • Color: A pale to medium brassy yellow with a bright metallic sheen.
  • Crystal Habit: Pyrite is famous for its well-formed isometric crystals. The most common and sought-after habit is the perfect cube, often with striated faces. It also forms as pyritohedrons (12-sided) and octahedrons (8-sided).
  • Luster: Bright, striking metallic luster.
  • Key Characteristics: Its cubic crystal form, hardness (hard enough to scratch glass), and greenish-black streak are key identifiers.

The mines in Hubei Province, China (such as the Daye Mine), are a world-class locality for Pyrite. They are renowned for producing exceptionally sharp, lustrous, and often large crystals. While Navajún, Spain is famous for its isolated cubes in a mudstone matrix, Hubei produces incredible clusters and combinations of Pyrite crystals—including perfect cubes—with a mirror-like luster that is second to none. Specimens from this region are considered some of the finest examples of the species in the world.

Metaphysical & Elemental Associations (The following information is based on metaphysical and crystal healing beliefs, not scientific study.)
  • Associated Chakra: Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)
Pyrite is a powerful stone for the Solar Plexus Chakra, the center of willpower, confidence, and action. It is an excellent energy shield, deflecting negativity while encouraging a positive, "can-do" attitude. It is a stone of manifestation, helping to draw in abundance and prosperity by fostering confidence and persistence.
  • Natural Elements: Earth & Fire
Pyrite is a dynamic stone that embodies both the Earth and Fire elements. Its cubic structure and grounding nature connect it to the Earth element, representing stability and manifestation. Its fiery color and energetic properties link it to the Fire element, representing vitality, action, passion, and willpower.
    • Zodiac Sign: Leo
Pyrite is a perfect match for Leo. Often called a "sun stone" for its golden color, it resonates with Leo's ruling planet, the Sun. It enhances Leo's natural confidence, creativity, and leadership qualities, while also providing a protective shield to keep their bright energy safe from negativity.
