What is Pyrolusite?
Pyrolusite is a manganese dioxide mineral and the most important ore of manganese. Its name comes from the Greek for "fire" and "to wash," as it was historically used in glassmaking to remove greenish and brownish tints. While it can form in crystalline or massive habits, it is most famous for its stunning dendritic formations.
Composition & Appearance

• Crystal Habit: The most prized habit is dendritic, where the mineral forms in delicate, branching, multi-faceted patterns that look exactly like fossilized ferns or trees. These formations are pseudofossils—they are not organic in origin but are created as mineral-rich water seeps through fine fractures in a host rock.

• Key Characteristics: The dendritic form is the most obvious identifier. All forms of Pyrolusite are very soft and will leave a black, sooty streak on hands and surfaces when handled.
