Quick Facts
  • Mineral Name: Schorl (the most common species of the Tourmaline group)
  • Common Name: Black Tourmaline
  • Chemical Formula: NaFe₃Al₆(Si₆O₁₈)(BO₃)₃(OH)₃(OH)
  • Mineral Class: Cyclosilicate
  • Hardness (Mohs Scale): 7 - 7.5
  • Primary Source: Imilchil, Midelt Province, Morocco

What is Black Tourmaline?
Black Tourmaline, known mineralogically as Schorl, is the iron-rich and most common member of the complex Tourmaline group of borosilicate minerals. It is prized for its deep black color and its unique electrical properties; it is both piezoelectric (generates a charge under pressure) and pyroelectric (generates a charge when heated).
Composition & Appearance
  • Color: Opaque, uniform, deep jet-black.
  • Crystal Habit: Typically forms as elongated, prismatic crystals. A defining characteristic is the presence of deep vertical striations running along the length of the crystals. They also have a unique, rounded-triangular cross-section that is very diagnostic.
  • Luster: Vitreous (glassy) to sometimes resinous.
  • Key Characteristics: Its striations, triangular cross-section, and high hardness are key identifiers. It is brittle and will fracture conchoidally.

The area around Imilchil in the High Atlas Mountains is a well-known Moroccan locality for producing high-quality Schorl crystals. Specimens from this region are valued by collectors for their sharp crystal form, high luster, and distinct striations. They are often found as single, well-terminated crystals or in clusters, sometimes in a matrix of Quartz or Feldspar, making them classic and representative examples of the species.

Metaphysical & Elemental Associations (The following information is based on metaphysical and crystal healing beliefs, not scientific study.)
  • Associated Chakra: Root Chakra (Muladhara)
Black Tourmaline is the quintessential stone of protection and grounding. It is powerfully connected to the Root Chakra, anchoring spiritual energy into the physical body and creating a strong sense of security. It is renowned for its ability to absorb, purify, and transmute negative energy (including from EMFs and psychic attack) into a lighter, more usable vibration.
  • Natural Element: Earth
With its deep black color and grounding properties, Black Tourmaline has an unparalleled connection to the Earth element. It embodies the energy of stability, security, and the protective power of the planet. It is like an energetic shield, keeping one's personal energy field clear and safe.
  • Zodiac Sign: Capricorn & Libra
Black Tourmaline is a cornerstone for Capricorn, providing the grounding and protective energy needed to pursue their ambitious goals with stability. It is also highly beneficial for Libra, helping to create a protective energetic boundary and shielding their sensitive nature from absorbing the negative energies of others.
