Quick Facts
  • Mineral Name: Ulexite
  • Common Name: TV Rock, TV Stone
  • Chemical Formula: NaCaB₅O₆(OH)₆·5H₂O (Hydrated Sodium Calcium Borate)
  • Mineral Class: Borate
  • Hardness (Mohs Scale): 2.5 (Very soft)
  • Primary Source: Mojave Desert, California, USA (specifically areas around Boron and Death Valley).
What is Ulexite?
Ulexite is a borate mineral that forms in evaporite deposits—arid regions where ancient, boron-rich lakes or playas have dried up. It is structurally complex, but it almost always grows in masses of fine, fibrous, parallel crystals.
Composition & Appearance
  • Color: Typically white, sometimes colorless.
  • Crystal Habit: Rarely forms distinct crystals. It is almost exclusively found in rounded, compact masses of tightly packed, fibrous, acicular (needle-like) crystals. This parallel fibrous structure is the key to its unique property.
  • Luster: Silky.
  • Key Characteristics: Ulexite is famous for its natural fiber optic properties. When a piece is cut and polished with two flat, parallel surfaces (perpendicular to the fibrous crystals), the fibers act like tiny light pipes. They transmit the image of whatever is underneath the stone directly to the top surface, making the text or image appear as if it's on the stone itself. This is why it earned the nickname "TV Rock." It is also very soft and will dissolve in hot water.
The Mojave Desert of California contains some of the largest borate deposits in the world. Localities like the U.S. Borax Mine in Boron and the salt flats of Death Valley are the classic and primary sources for the high-quality, fibrous Ulexite that is sold commercially as "TV Rock." The geological history of this region created the perfect conditions for the formation of these massive deposits, making California the archetypal source for this unique mineral.

Metaphysical & Elemental Associations
(The following information is based on metaphysical and crystal healing beliefs, not scientific study.)
  • Associated Chakra: Third Eye (Ajna)
Ulexite is considered a premier stone for the Third Eye Chakra. Its ability to bring what is underneath to the surface is a physical representation of its metaphysical properties: enhancing intuition, inner vision, and psychic abilities. It is believed to help one "see" the truth of a situation, understand problems on a deeper level, and stimulate imagination and creativity.
  • Natural Element: Wind/Air
The energy of Ulexite is strongly connected to the Wind/Air element. This relates to its ability to enhance mental clarity, perception, and telepathic communication. It is a stone for the mind, helping to clear confusion and open pathways to higher thought and understanding.
  • Zodiac Sign: Gemini & Aquarius
Ulexite resonates with the intellectual and curious nature of Gemini, helping to focus their mind and process information on a more intuitive level. It is also an excellent stone for the visionary Aquarius, as it helps to stimulate their insight and bring their forward-thinking ideas into clearer focus.
