Gemstone - Vanadinite
Quick Facts
What is Vanadinite?
Vanadinite is a dense and brittle mineral belonging to the apatite group. It is a secondary mineral, meaning it forms from the chemical alteration of a pre-existing primary mineral. In this case, it develops in the oxidized zones of lead ore deposits, where vanadium-rich solutions react with minerals like Galena. It is sought after by collectors for its stunningly vibrant color and sharp, well-formed crystals.

Composition & Appearance
- Color: Mibladen Vanadinite is famous for its brilliant, fiery red to reddish-orange hues. Specimens can also exhibit deeper, brownish-red or brown coloration, sometimes within the same crystal cluster. The color is derived from the element vanadium.
- Crystal Habit: Its signature form is the hexagonal prism. These crystals can be short and tabular (puck-like) or grow into more elongated prisms. They most often form as a dense crust or "druse" of thousands of small crystals covering a matrix.
- Luster: Exhibits a brilliant resinous to adamantine (diamond-like) luster, giving the crystals a shiny, almost wet appearance.
- Matrix: Often found on a contrasting matrix of iron-stained rock or associated with bladed white or reddish Barite, which makes the red crystals stand out visually.
