FIGURED SPECIMEN INFO:
Specimen: NPL 94335.
Locality: Canyon Lake, Comal County, Texas.
Stratigraphy: Glen Rose Formation, Trinity Group.
SYSTEMATIC PALEONTOLOGY – TAXONOMY
Class: Echinoidea Leske, 1778
Subclass: Euechinoidea Bronn, 1860
Infraclass: Carinacea Kroh & Smith, 2010
Superorder: Calycina Gregory, 1900
Order: Salenioida Delage & Hérouard, 1903
Family: Saleniidae L. Agassiz, 1838
Genus: HETEROSALENIA Cotteau, 1861
Species: Heterosalenia sp.
TYPE SPECIES: Heterosalenia martini Cotteau, 1861
DIAGNOSIS
A small Heterosalenia characterized by a ring of small tubercles surrounding the periproct and a deeply pitted apical disc featuring many tubercles. Pore arrangement is unigeminate adapically, becoming trigeminate adorally.
STRATIGRAPHICAL OCCURRENCE & DISTRIBUTION
Group: Trinity
Formations: Glen Rose Formation
Stratigraphic Units: Lower Cretaceous, Albian
Counties: Comal
Abundance: Rare; only two specimens found.
Associated Fauna: Found in whitish-yellowish soft clay Hyposalenia phillipsae, Pseudodiadema aguilerai, Pygopyrina hancockensis, Parorthopsis comalensis, Echinothuria mccallae, Coenholectypus sp., Heterosalenia sp. Type 2.
DESCRIPTION
TOP: Shape: Test subpentagonal.
Apical System: Large, pentagonal apical disc (51% of test width).
SIDE: Ambitus: Positioned at midpoint.
Side shape: Sides pentagonal then angled toward the apical disc.
Profile: Apical disc curved (convex); height 53% of length. Bottom large.
AMB: Amb shape: Straight.
Amb width: Ambulacra are 33% the width of interambulacra.
PORE PAIRS: Arrangement: Uniserial.
Elements: Unigeminate (simple) throughout most of the column, becoming trigeminate (compounded) adorally.
TUBERCLES: Primary Perforated: Interambulacral tubercles perforated.
Primary Crenulate: Interambulacral tubercles crenulated.
Ambulacral Tubercles: Two rows of primary tubercles staggered between sets of pore pairs, with fine granulation between.
Interambulacral Tubercles: Large; larger on adoral surface, smaller near apical system.
Areolas: Large; mamelons protruding.
Scrobicular Tubercles: Surround primary tubercles (including the adradial side), excluding the confluent upper and lower ends.
APICAL SYSTEM: Shape: Round, curved (convex), gently raised on corona; width 51% of test diameter.
Plating: Ocular I is insert (touches periproct); it is wider and thinner than the other four oculars. Three genital plates are rectangular; the other two are modified by the periproct cut-out. Suranal plate is rectangular, approximately half the size of the genital plates.
Genital Pores: Located near the outer edge of each genital plate.
Ornamentation: Genital plates are ornate with deep sutural pits at each plate boundary; 1 or 2 tubercles present at each boundary.
PERIPROCT (ANUS): Shape: Wider than tall.
Location: Displaced toward Ocular I.
Ornamentation: Surrounded by a ring of small tubercles.
PERISTOME (MOUTH): Size: Large; diameter 62% of bottom surface.
Lip: Buccal notches very shallow.
SPINES: Unknown.
SPECIMENS STUDIED & CONDITION: Two specimens studied: NPL 94335 (Dr. Stephen Crane collection) and a specimen found by Ed Elliott.
ETYMOLOGY
(Not Applicable; open nomenclature)
REMARKS & COMPARISONS
Remarks: This form was found at the same locality as another undescribed form (Heterosalenia sp. Type 1). It differs from Type 1 in the details of the apical system: Type 1 has a flat apical disc that sits high on the corona, whereas Type 2 has a curved apical cap. The apical system of Type 2 closely resembles that of Heterosalenia ridiculum, but possesses much smaller ocular plates.
