Genus: LANIERIA Duncan, 1889
Species: Lanieria uvaldana Cooke, 1953
TYPE SPECIES: Cidaris lanieri d'Orbigny, 1839
DIAGNOSIS
Test subglobular and circular to subpentagonal. Apical system central with five perforated genital plates. Periproct is large, pyriform, and inframarginal, extending nearly from the peristome to the ambitus. Distinguished from L. lanieri by significantly larger peristome and periproct openings (Cooke, 1953).
STRATIGRAPHICAL OCCURRENCE & DISTRIBUTION
Group: Taylor
Formations: Anacacho Limestone
Stratigraphic Units: Upper Cretaceous, Campanian
Counties: Uvalde
Abundance: Rare.
DESCRIPTION
TOP: Length, width, height: 18.9 mm L × 18.4 mm W × 13.4 mm H.
Top shape: Horizontal outline circular to subpentagonal (Cooke, 1953).
Top domed: Subglobular.
SIDE: Side shape: Subglobular (Cooke, 1953).
BOTTOM: Bottom shape: Base rounded (much more so than in Holectypus); slightly depressed around the peristome (Cooke, 1953).
AMB: Amb shape: Ambulacra are about half as wide as interambulacra.
Amb arrangement: Consists of many straight, very narrow plates.
Pore Zones: Straight and continuous from apical system to peristome.
PORE PAIRS: Arrangement: Each plate possesses only one zygopore (simple plating, no tendency toward compounding in this species) (Cooke, 1953).
TUBERCLES: Distribution: Base closely covered with rather large tubercles arranged in transverse rows.
Features: Perforated and scrobiculate (Cooke, 1953).
INTERAMB: Shape: Interambulacral areas composed of straight plates about five times as wide as those of the ambulacra (Cooke, 1953).
APICAL SYSTEM: Location: Central.
Plating: Contains five perforated genital plates with a central madreporite. Ocular plates are insert (touching the madreporite) (Cooke, 1953).
PERIPROCT (ANUS): Shape: Large and pyriform (pear-shaped).
Location: Inframarginal; extends nearly from the peristome to the ambitus.
Visibility: Not visible from above; flush with the test surface (Cooke, 1953).
PERISTOME (MOUTH): Shape: Circular with rather deep notches (buccal slits).
Size: Large; approximately one-third as wide as the horizontal diameter (Cooke, 1953).
SPINES: Unknown.
SPECIMENS STUDIED & CONDITION: Paratype USNM 328696 (Figured). Holotype USNM 108375 described by Cooke.
ETYMOLOGY
Named for Uvalde County, Texas, the type locality.
REMARKS & COMPARISONS
Remarks: The species is referred to Lanieria rather than Holectypus primarily because of its subglobular shape and the presence of five genital pores. Cooke noted that the internal partition structure is unknown for this species.

Remarks: The species is referred to Lanieria rather than Holectypus primarily because of its subglobular shape and the presence of five genital pores. Cooke noted that the internal partition structure is unknown for this species.
Comparisons:
- L. lanieri: L. uvaldana possesses a peristome and periproct that are more than twice as large as those of the type species, L. lanieri (Cooke, 1953).
- Coenholectypus planatus: The peristome and periproct structure superficially resembles that of Holectypus (Coenholectypus) planatus (Roemer), but L. uvaldana is distinguished by its much more rounded/subglobular base (vs. the flat base of H. planatus) (Cooke, 1953).
